Ipe (eepay) is a beautiful exotic hardwood from Brazil. It is rot resistant, bug resistant and extremely durable. It has a rich tight grain that can hold it's color if treated annually. With no maintenace it will turn to a grey weathered board and will still last multiple decades.
Cedar is a lighter toned softwood that is mold and bug resistant. With no refinishing, it will age into gray tones. It does well in full sun conditions, and does not become as hot as other woods. The main downside to Cedar is that splinters and board splitting are more common than with other wood boards. Cedar can be clear coated for a honey finish, and can take most color stain well.
Treated pine is the least expensive of the wood options. It is easy to work with, and is easy to replace boards if needed. The expansion and contraction of individual boards is unpredictable and this can sometimes cause large gaps to form. Requires more regular maintenance than other wood options. A waiting period is required for stain application as time is required for treatment to evaporate from boards. Pine boards take most stain color well.
Mahogany is similar to ipe but is softer and less durable. Similar to ipe and other hardwoods, it also has bug and rot resistant qualities. When stained, looks very similar to teak. Avoiding high moisture areas is recommended because it can become slippery. Boards can become gray and/or black if not routinely maintained.
Redwood deck boards share a lot of similarities with cedar boards. Unlike most cedar, redwood is typically sourced out of the western United States so product is typically more readily available. Redwood boards possess more of a red hue compared to cedar’s golden tones. Redwood is a soft yet durable lumber.
Plug systems use a stainless screw that is counter sunk into the deck board. Deck specific plugs are then inserted over the screw head to conceal and protect them from weather.
Edge screw by CAMO provides an unpenetrated deck surface.
Though slightly visible from the side, it creates no opportunity for dirt and debris to fill the screw heads.
